This article conducts an interdisciplinary feminist investigation of Assia Djebar and Virginia Woolf's literary legacies, both pivotal authors of the 20th century noted for challenging stereotypical gender narratives through their inventive narrative techniques. Originating from divergent cultural and historical contexts, Djebar's incursion into postcolonial narratives and Woolf's examination of women's internal worlds and social expectations both resist prevailing narratives, proposing alternate renderings of women's lives. In this research, we contrast Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse with Djebar's Women of Algiers in Their Apartment and Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade. Our goal is to discern their distinct narrative methods for confronting history, gender, and language. Notably, this article explores their singular tactics for representing feminine subjectivity, leveraging narrative methods to defy oppressive discourses, and advocating for gender identity. An integrated analysis of their works offers a deeper comprehension of the intricacies in their depictions of women's lives and identities. This comparative examination enriches feminist and postcolonial literary studies by highlighting the global obstacles faced by women across cultural and historical spectra.

Cet article mène une enquête féministe interdisciplinaire sur les héritages littéraires d'Assia Djebar et de Virginia Woolf, deux auteurs clés du XXe siècle connus pour avoir remis en question les stéréotypes de genre grâce à leurs techniques narratives inventives. Issues de contextes culturels et historiques divergents, l'incursion de Djebar dans les récits postcoloniaux et l'examen par Woolf des mondes intérieurs des femmes et des attentes sociales résistent tous deux aux récits dominants, proposant d'autres interprétations de la vie des femmes. Dans cette recherche, nous mettons en contraste Mrs. Dalloway et To the Lighthouse de Woolf avec Women of Algiers in Their Apartment et Fantasia : An Algerian Cavalcade de Djebar. Notre objectif est de discerner leurs méthodes narratives distinctes pour confronter l'histoire, le genre et la langue. Introduction

This essay aims to provide an interdisciplinary feminist critique of the literary works of Assia Djebar and Virginia Woolf, two distinguished 20th-century writers renowned for their pioneering portrayals of femininity and power dynamics. Stemming from disparate cultural and historical settings – Djebar as an Algerian novelist grappling with postcolonial themes and Woolf as a British modernist author exploring women’s internal lives and societal expectations in early 20th-century England – both authors employ novel narrative methods to contest prevailing gender narratives, introducing alternative depictions of women’s lives. We examine Woolf’s “Mrs. Dalloway” and “To the Lighthouse” and compare them with Djebar’s “Women of Algiers in Their Apartment” and “Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade.” In doing so, this study aims to decipher how these authors engage with history, gender, and language in their respective works.
